Sono sindromi sistemiche o circoscritte, ereditarie o acquisite, caratterizzate dall’accumulo esclusivamente extracellulare, in svariati organi, di una proteina amorfa insolubile, detta amiloide, che impedisce le normali funzioni tissutali. L’amiloide non è un’unica sostanza chimica, ma comprende vari tipi di aggregati proteici che hanno in comune la peculiare configurazione strutturale a β-foglietti ripiegati alla diffrazione ai raggi X e caratteristiche altrettanto uniche alle colorazioni istologiche.
