काही माणसांचा जसा थांग लागत नाही, तसा वाटेचाही अंदाज लागत नाही. माणसाची `खोली' एक वेळ अजमावता येते; पण या वाटेची लांबी कधी समजत नसते. कदाचित् म्हणूनच पाऊलावाटांची लांबी मोजण्याच्या भानगडीत कोणी पडत नसावा. देशाच्या या टोकापासून त्या टोकापर्यंत जाणाऱ्या मोठ्या रस्त्यावर मैलाचे दगड दिसतात; पण पाऊलवाटेवर मैलाचा दगड अजून कोणी रोवलेला नाही! आपली मोजमापं कोणी घेऊ नयेत, याच बुद्धीनं ती वाकडी चालत असावी. एकंदर तिची चालच मोठी मजेशीर असते. जरा नीट चालून पुढं गेल्यासारखी ती करील मग एकदम डाव्या अंगाला वळून लवणात गडपच होईल; तर पुढं काही अंतरावर उजव्या अंगाला वळलेली दिसेल. मध्येच उभी राहून मागं फिरून पाहील आणि पुन्हा चालू लागेल. अशा पाऊलवाटेला टेप कुठं लावायचा आणि तिची लांबी कशी मोजायची?
