Amazon is basically a customer acquisition channel moving to become a revenue generating channel. So free or not free one has to provide the card details for sure. Some products are free for some one need to pay ( they need to pay their staff too). Nicholas Lovell's book "The Curve" is excellent ,speaks about how variable pricing can be targeted for customers according to their capacity. Explains the tactics used by competitors to destroy (supplying them with non licensed version of software ,pinted cds, digital files send to you which actually has intellectual property attached to it, etc).Business that focus on quality gets destroyed because competitor steals their idea and provide at a cheaper quality at a lower price. This book is worth reading
