In first grade I wrote a poem for my mother to tell her that she was literally the best mother in the world. The poem had a word “Lenin” in it. In 1991 when the Soviet Union collapsed, I was old enough to be a “pionerka”, but not old enough to be a “komsomolka”, which was a shame because I liked the high school student uniform but never had a chance to wear it.
