App functionality is fine, it's the core service that's a problem. Minimum cost for "leads" is $35/week, and conversion rates are terrible because they charge multiple workers for the same lead. Per-lead pricing is random and makes no sense. Thumbtack forces contractors to waste a lot of time and effort responding instantly and quoting jobs instead of doing work that actually pays. I use a lot of different platforms to find work and this has been by far the most parasitic.

they need more options for clients to give detailed descriptions of the work they want done. paying 35 for a lead that is described as a high value repair, only to contact the client and find out the job is only worth 100 is very expensive, you sometimes end up doing work for free to avoid getting a bad review. other than the few times that happens I think thumbtack is on the right track.

I am a balloon artisit and event decorator. There are a lot of opportunities which I really like. However, I don't like that we have to automatically pay when a lead reaches out. Many times, the leads don't give details about what they are looking for. Sometimes they are just asking a question to narrow down their choices and their lead price could be $20+. Even when we can't do the job due to location or availability we still have to pay.
