Kanji Trail teaches the 314 kanji and 1,557 words of a first-year Japanese course (JLPT N5 and N4). It's built around what makes kanji hard: one character with several readings, a shape you have to be able to write, parts shared with dozens of other kanji, and look-alikes that are easy to mix up.
EVERY READING, IN THE WORDS THAT USE IT
Each kanji has a readings map. 生 is セイ in 学生, い in 生きる, and う in 生まれる: every reading, with the words that use it. A reading quiz then shows you a word and asks which reading its kanji takes there.
MEANING, READING AND WRITING, EACH ON ITS OWN SCHEDULE
Knowing what 読 means isn't the same as knowing how to say it or write it. Kanji Trail remembers each one separately and reviews each on its own schedule. A kanji's reading is introduced once you know its meaning, and a word once you know all of its kanji.
WRITE IT ON THE GRID
Stroke-order practice on genkouyoushi squares, checked stroke by stroke as you draw. Trace it first, then write it over a faint guide, then from memory. Tracing is practice; the other two count as review.
TAP A PART, SEE ITS FAMILY
Every kanji is broken into its parts. Tap 木 in 休 to see every other kanji drawn with it, such as 本, 林 and 森, with how well you know each one.
DON'T MIX THESE UP
日 or 目? 休 or 体? The look-alike drill puts easily confused kanji side by side in real words. Look-alikes you pick by mistake in a quiz are added to it automatically, so it drills your own mistakes.
READ REAL JAPANESE
A graded reader of 1,100 real sentences from the Tatoeba project, each with checked furigana and its English a tap away. A sentence opens up once you've learned every kanji in it, so what you can read grows as you study. The reader also shows which kanji to learn next to open the most new sentences.
