This is so effective, my Chinese friends can't believe my progress! 哈哈哈 I never thought I could learn a language on my phone, but it's turning out to be much better than textbooks. I like that I learn the pinyin, characters, and sounds at the same time. I try to cover the pinyin with my fingers and look at only the characters and always repeat aloud the words to get the best learning. There are no lessons! Everything is learned by doing the quizzes alone and getting immediate feedback. I very quicky work out the grammar too without being taught.
I want to echo another review which said that the Speaking Practice unfortunately doesn't work any more - after a few questions it will just give a score of 0 for everything, so it can't be completed. I hope the developers can fix this! Other than that, it is still a fantastic app.
I love the mix of different kinds of exercises in each lesson, including multiple choice translation, fill in the correct words, practice drawing characters, and more. Mixing it up like that keeps it from getting boring, and I expect it works better for learning too. I like to go through each lesson once with both pinyin and characters on, then again with pinyin off so I focus on reading the characters. The character drawing practice works for me better than any other method I've tried, including copying from a book and tutoring by a native speaker. Again, I draw the character a few times with the cues on, and then practice with the cues off. That way I'm forced to try to remember what stroke comes next, and it only corrects me if I get it wrong. I really love this app!
The speaking lesson no longer works correctly. It is fine for the first few sentences but after that it is always a score of 0 no matter what is said. I have fed this back but no response and doesn't look like anyone will try and fix it. Was brilliant before this bug but now it is useless.
I'm a native Chinese speaker who learned Chinese for 10 years in a government school but have not used the language for 12 years after that so my skill has been on a slow decline. This is the best app for me to recap and remember what I learned so long ago and refresh my memory. There are also challenges and games to play and compete with other app users.
I give it around a three and a half. Four ish. For an already Chinese speaker this is pointless . And for people who wish to learn, they aren't learning much because all they do is repeat things over and over again. There isn't much new going on. Perhaps this is best for children .. it is good though.
