About this app

The daily walkaround check and driver defect record, kept on the phone of the
person whose own name is on the O-licence.

WalkCheck is for the owner-driver and the one to five vehicle operator: HGV,
PSV, van, trailer, horsebox, tipper, recovery, minibus. There is no operator
account, no sign-in and no signal needed. The record belongs to the driver.

A CHECK THAT TAKES ABOUT TWENTY SECONDS

One screen, the whole item list for that vehicle type, everything already set
to checked with no defect, and one confirm. You only touch an item when
something is wrong. Large targets, high contrast, one hand, in the dark, with
the engine running. Any app slower than the paper pad in the cab loses to the
paper pad.

THE 24-HOUR RULE, THE WAY IT IS WRITTEN

The guidance asks for at least one walkaround check in every 24-hour period the
vehicle is used. WalkCheck measures the rolling 24 hours between two moments,
not the calendar day, so a check at 22:00 still covers a driver at 00:05. A
calendar reading raises a second check at midnight in the middle of a night
shift, which is the driver this app is built for. The screen says which reading
it uses, so nobody running a calendar-day system is told something else
silently.

A vehicle standing on the yard is marked laid up and stops asking. Vehicles on
arduous work can be set to more than one check inside 24 hours.

ENTERING IT LATE IS STILL ENTERING IT

"This check was done on..." sits on the entry screen, not buried in an edit
menu. A record entered later is marked as entered later, with no red badge and
nothing blocked. Both moments are stored: when the check was done and when it
was written down.

DEFECTS, RECTIFICATION AND SIGN-OFF

A defect can be raised from the home screen at any time, not only during a
check, because a wheel-nut indicator found at a services at two in the
afternoon has to go somewhere. Each one stays open until it is rectified: who
did it, when, at what odometer, with a note and a signature. Driver-reportable
and prohibition-level defects are held apart, so a serious one visibly stops
the vehicle, and open defects sit above everything else.

NIL DEFECTS ARE RECORDS, NOT GAPS

A clean check is stored as a record. Retention is held separately for the two
kinds, because the published guidance treats them differently: defect reports
are kept at least 15 months, nil-defect reports are recommended at three. Both
are yours to change, nothing is ever deleted automatically, and the app tells
you before a record would age out.

THE INSPECTION PACK

One PDF per vehicle or date range: every check, defect, rectification and
signature, in the order an examiner reads them.

VEHICLE RECORDS AND REMINDERS

Registration, type, annual test, tax, insurance, tachograph calibration and the
next safety inspection, with reminders at 30, 14, 7 and 1 days. The daily check
reminder is off until you switch it on.

BACKUP

A .wcbak file you can move to another phone. Records with a 15-month retention
expectation should not live on one device with no way off it.

WHO IT IS FOR

Owner-drivers, small operators, horsebox and recovery operators, community
transport and minibus, plant and tipper one-man bands, in the UK and Ireland.

WHAT WALKCHECK IS NOT

It is not fleet software: no operator portal, no multi-driver accounts, no
cloud. It is not tachograph software: no driver hours, no working time, no card
download. It certifies nothing and approves nothing. It helps you keep the
records DVSA asks to see, and the item lists and vocabulary are the UK regime,
in every language the app is offered in.
