戰鬥沒有統一的指揮。十字軍通常不追擊敵人，以免離開兵營太遠。十字軍裝備有攻城器材。它們使用攻城槌和裝有輪子的活動攻城碉樓來擊破要塞城牆和城堡圍牆。在進行聯合遠征或海上遠征時，十字軍利用大型貨船輸送軍隊和武器。在聯合遠征中，他們曾多次試圖組織陸海兩軍協同作戰，規定了遠征開始的地點、時間及在敵國境內部隊同艦船會合的地點和時間。然而，十字軍進行的這八次遠征都缺乏充分的準備。
與十字軍作戰的土耳其人和阿拉伯人的主要兵種是輕騎兵。他們裝備有弓或駑和馬刀。其戰鬥素質和機動能力都優於騎士重騎兵。
