해리엇 터브먼은 미국의 노예 해방 운동가예요.
미국의 한 농장에서 노예로 태어나 채찍질을 당하고 매를 맞으며 자라는 동안 점점 자유를 꿈꾸게 되었어요. 1849년, 자유를 찾아 탈출해 노예 제도가 없는 북동부 펜실베이니아주로 간 뒤 지하 철도의 차장이 되어, 남부의 많은 흑인 노예들을 북부나 캐나다로 데려다주는 일을 했어요.
1861년, 남북 전쟁이 일어나자 군대에서 간호사로 활동했고, 몇 년 뒤 대장으로서 300여 명의 군인들과 함께 콤바히강을 습격하여 800명에 가까운 흑인들을 구했지요.
가난한 흑인들을 위해 지은 ‘해리엇 터브먼의 집’에 들어가 살다가 세상을 떠난 뒤로는 많은 이들로부터 존경을 받았어요.
