아멜리아 에어하트는 1928년, 대서양 횡단 비행에 최초로 성공한 미국의 여성 비행사예요. 에어하트는 캐나다의 군인 병원에서 일할 때, 비행사가 되기로 결심하고 비행 기술과 비행기 정비 기술을 익혔어요. 1922년에 어머니에게 낡은 비행기를 선물받고, 그 비행기에 카나리아라는 이름을 붙였지요. 에어하트는 카나리아를 타고 그해에 열린 비행 대회에서 고도 4,300미터까지 올라가는 데 성공했어요.
에어하트는 대서양 횡단에 이어 북아메리카 단독 횡단 비행, 대서양 단독 횡단 비행, 하와이 호놀룰루에서 캘리포니아주 오클랜드까지 단독 비행에 차례로 성공했어요. 하지만 1937년 7월 3일, 세계 일주 비행에 도전하던 중에 태평양 하늘에서 실종되어 사라졌어요.
