레이철 카슨은 《침묵의 봄》을 써서 환경 문제를 파헤친 미국의 생물학자예요. 존스 홉킨스 대학교 대학원에서 박사 과정을 중퇴한 뒤, 어업국에서 라디오 연재물의 대본을 쓰면서 과학을 주제로 한 글쓰기에 흥미를 느꼈어요.
해양 생물을 다룬 글 <바다 밑>을 문학잡지 《애틀랜틱 먼슬리》에 보내면서 인기 작가가 되었고, 《우리를 둘러싼 바다》 역시 카슨에게 상과 큰 상금을 안겨 주었며 인기 도서가 되었어요.
카슨은 암에 걸린 뒤에도 계속 글을 써서 1962년에 《침묵의 봄》을 펴냈어요. 카슨은 이 책으로 세상에 ‘화학 살충제’의 독성을 알렸고, 상원 청문회장에서 이를 증언하는 등 마지막 순간까지도 생물과 환경을 향한 관심의 끈을 놓지 않았습니다.
