몬테소리는 이탈리아의 교육학자로, 로마 대학 의과 대학에 들어가 이탈리아 최초의 여성 의사가 되었습니다. 1897년에 로마 대학 정신과 병동에서 일하면서 지적 장애 아이들의 교육에 대해 관심을 갖게 되었고, 1901년에 교육학을 체계적으로 공부하기 시작했어요. 이후 산 로렌초의 빈민가에 최초의 어린이집을 열었고, 1909년에는 《몬테소리 교육법》을 출간했습니다.
1913년에는 최초로 이탈리아 로마에 국제 몬테소리 교사 양성 과정이 개설되었으며, 세계 곳곳에 몬테소리 교육이 널리 퍼졌어요. 몬테소리 교육법을 개발하고 아이들의 권리 향상 등을 위해 노력한 공로로 몬테소리는 1951년까지 노벨 평화상 후보에 세 번 올랐으나 모두 거절했으며, 마지막까지 아이들을 위한 교육에 힘쓰다가 1952년에 세상을 떠났습니다.
