સ્વામી વિવેકાનંદના પત્રો ભારતના પુનરુત્થાન માટેની તેમની યોજનાઓ તેમજ તેમના અવતરણના હેતુને ચરિતાર્થ કરવા માટે જે ઉપકરણોનો ઉપયોગ તેઓ કરવા માગતા હતા, એની એંધાણી આપી જાય છે. આ વિરાટ દેશ ગોકળગાયની ગતિએ પ્રગતિ કરી રહ્યો હતો અને સાવ શિથિલ હતો, તે નિહાળીને સ્વામી વિવેકાનંદ અધીર થઈ જતા. લોકો ભલે તેમને તન્મયતાથી સાંભળતા, હર્ષથી થનગનતા અને તેમની પ્રશંસાના પુષ્પો વેરતાં હતા, આમ છતાંય વીરપૂજાના ઉત્સાહ-પ્રદર્શન સાથે આધ્યાત્મિક-રાષ્ટ્રિય પુનરુત્થાનમાં હોંશપૂર્વક ઝંપલાવતા ન હતા. એટલે જ સ્વામીજીએ ઠપકાના જોરદાર સપાટા લગાવ્યા હતા. સ્વામીજીએ વ્યક્તિપૂજા, અંગત પ્રશંસા કે નામયશની ઇચ્છા કદીયે સેવી ન હતી; દેશવાસીઓ પાસેથી નક્કર કાર્યની જ અપેક્ષા તેઓ રાખતા.
