Industry Leading Security Features
Messages are stored on Proton Mail servers using end-to-end encryption at all times and are transmitted securely between Proton servers and user devices. This largely eliminates the risk of message interception.

Zero Access to Your Email Content
Proton Mail's zero access architecture means that your data is encrypted in a way that makes it inaccessible to us. Data is encrypted on the client side using an encryption key that Proton does not have access to. This means we don't have the technical ability to decrypt your messages.

Open-Source Cryptography
Proton Mail's open-source software has been thoroughly vetted by security experts from around the world to ensure the highest levels of protection. Proton Mail only uses secure implementations of AES, RSA, along with OpenPGP, while all of the cryptographic libraries used are open source. By using open-source libraries, Proton Mail can guarantee that the encryption algorithms used do not have clandestinely built-in back doors.

Proton Mail in the press:

“Proton Mail is an email system which uses end-to-end encryption, making it impossible for outside parties to monitor.” Forbes

“A new email service being developed by a group from MIT that met at CERN promises to bring secure, encrypted email to the masses and keep sensitive information away from prying eyes.” Huffington Post

I have pretty robust mail filtering and sorting set up, so it's pretty aggravating when the filters only seem to run some of the time. Notifications are a little wonky too - sometimes I get notifications for emails, sometimes I don't. I love that I can trash an email right from a notification, but then the notification doesn't go away.

Issues with spam filters require more details, so we recommend that you report what's happening to us at: proton.me/support/contact, where we'll be able to investigate. As for not receiving notification, try the following troubleshooting suggestions: https://proton.me/support/not-receiving-push-notifications .

It's only ok. The search doesn't work at all for me on 4.13.0 (there don't seem to be any newer versions available to update to on this device). This makes it mostly unusable for me. The search works on the mobile version of the website though! You also can't select all emails, or edit folders/labels on the app while you can on the mobile website. I also wish you could edit filters like on the desktop site, and swipe left and right between emails like you can with most mobile email clients.

Swipe actions are supported in our dedicated mobile app. We’ll pass along your interest in adding a "select all" option to the team for future consideration. On our mobile apps, you can currently search by subject line, sender, and recipient. For full content search, please use the Proton Mail web or desktop apps.

The app takes forever to load. And frequently it doesn't send the entire message. I will type the message, click send, and only the first few characters make it through. Then I get some error that it failed to save the draft. This is ridiculous! 7/2025 update - they have made significant improvements and it is really good now!
