Industry Leading Security Features
Messages are stored on Proton Mail servers using end-to-end encryption at all times and are transmitted securely between Proton servers and user devices. This largely eliminates the risk of message interception.

Zero Access to Your Email Content
Proton Mail's zero access architecture means that your data is encrypted in a way that makes it inaccessible to us. Data is encrypted on the client side using an encryption key that Proton does not have access to. This means we don't have the technical ability to decrypt your messages.

Open-Source Cryptography
Proton Mail's open-source software has been thoroughly vetted by security experts from around the world to ensure the highest levels of protection. Proton Mail only uses secure implementations of AES, RSA, along with OpenPGP, while all of the cryptographic libraries used are open source. By using open-source libraries, Proton Mail can guarantee that the encryption algorithms used do not have clandestinely built-in back doors.

Proton Easy Switch
Migrate from Gmail, Outlook, Yahoo, iCloud Mail or AOL to Proton Mail in just a few taps. Your messages, calendars and contacts are transferred automatically, so you’re up‑and‑running in moments—without any manual exporting or importing.

Gmail Auto‑forwarding
Enable auto‑forwarding from any number of Gmail accounts and funnel all the emails that matter into your Proton Mail inbox. Preserve Gmail’s convenience while adding an extra layer of privacy protection.

Proton Mail in the press:

“Proton Mail is an email system which uses end-to-end encryption, making it impossible for outside parties to monitor.” Forbes

“A new email service being developed by a group from MIT that met at CERN promises to bring secure, encrypted email to the masses and keep sensitive information away from prying eyes.” Huffington Post

I like using Proton Mail overall. The interface is simple and clear. I'm not a big fan of the new mailbox sorting that copies Gmail. They should lean into the filters, tags and folders that already exist! Give me a one-click way to add a sender or domain to a filter and I'd be a happy camper. My biggest issue is that I like to read newsletters and a recent update added a "Click to read entire message" forcing me to rescroll down to find my spot. Just show me the whole email or make it an option

Overall works well. My main complaints are that the app doesn't sync well. Emails I've deleted on the desktop are still showing in my inbox. I also don't like that the newest email in a thread appears at the bottom. There's no option to change this, you either live with it or ungroup all emails. I'd be more willing to sign up for a subscription if it weren't for these issues. Edit: I know I can ungroup them, I don't want to.

Thank you for your 4-star review! You can ungroup your emails by navigating to Settings → Mailbox preferences → Conversation grouping. Please report the sync issues through the in-app 'Report a problem' option so we can document your report accordingly.

Been reliable for years now it won't let me log in on desktop and phone as of this morning. 1st the folders wouldn't load now I can't even access my account - "Invalid token" "Too many requests, try later". Deleted then reinstalled Android app and when I sign in, it just keeps loading but no access. I pay for this email for privacy and security and I can't get in.

Yesterday, a subset of Proton users experienced intermittent service disruptions. The incident began during exceptional database maintenance following last week's datacenter overheating incident. All Proton services are now stable and no user data has been lost. More info available on our status page: https://status.proton.me/incidents/lj22kf1nc8yz
