About this app

With the NABU app “Bird World” you can get to know and identify all the bird species that regularly occur in Germany. The NABU bird world is the free app for bird lovers and everyone else who cares about protecting our nature and its diversity.

The fully functional, free basic version of the new NABU bird app replaces the previous NABU bird app, but contains 80 additional bird species and lots of new functions. Each species has its own identification plate. These are the special wow factor of the app, because they consist of cropped photos that can hardly be distinguished from the best bird drawings, but show much more detail. The panels show the typical plumage of a species; the most important characteristics are marked directly on the panels. Distribution maps of all 308 bird species as well as a search and updated identification function are also included in the free basic version.

You can use the app to create watch lists and export them for your own use as well as for participation in the NABU campaigns “Hour of the Winter Birds” and “Hour of the Garden Birds”. These nationwide reporting campaigns in early January and mid-May are aimed at all nature lovers. With your participation, you will help to record trends in the species' populations and help to initiate necessary protective measures.

The basic version of the app can be expanded through in-app purchases. Thanks to the proceeds from these extensions, the app and its basic functions can be offered free of charge. Another part of the proceeds from in-app purchases goes to NABU's work to protect nature and especially the local birdlife.

The free basic version (1.2 GB) includes:

• Detailed information on 315 bird species
• 1,400 images in 315 destination panels with unique cropped photos
• Species portraits for each species with information on appearance, identification, possible confusion, ecology, song, laying, behavior and frequency + population
• European distribution maps for each species
• Ability to display only the 100 most common birds (to help beginners)
• Gallery view with groups of similar bird species
• Group view with a strict taxonomic arrangement according to the families of the IOC list
• A-Z view showing birds in alphabetical order
• View species names in 20 languages
• Search function
• Intuitive determination function
• View similar species
• Compare function for direct comparison of images, distribution maps, eggs, and bird songs of up to 8 species on the smartphone + up to 16 species on the tablet
• Location determination and data collection using GPS

The app can be expanded with the following additional purchases:

• Bird songs in-app with 1000 songs, calls or the drumming of woodpeckers from all 315 bird species €3.99

• All-in-one subscription with all additional content (distribution maps for Germany, 3D/AR feature, egg pictures, bird calls, videos) including automatic voice and image recognition: Monthly subscription for €3.99 or annual subscription for €24.99 €.

Ratings and reviews

This generally is a great app. The last update, however, was a user ripp-off. With the update, all my in-app purchases disappeared without any information. They had been one-time purchases, and now the system apparently changed to a monthly/yearly subscription without me being able to use my one-time purchases anymore. Update 2023-06-07: The developers respondet. The issue with the purchases could be solved by uninstalling the app, restarting the phone and reinstalling the app.

Annoying: Call recognition costs substantial amount of money, but doesn't work. A) Selection is limited to 5 seconds. B) As soon as the button to analyse is tapped, the app resets. C) Also, there is no way to save the audio file to analyse at another time later. Developers seem to expect users to always have full network coverage available to be able to determine bird species in real time while out and about. Ridiculous. Two stars only because the rest of the paid-for functions work ok.

Helpful to find a bird 🐦 you saw or like. Nicely arranged, helpful pictures and information. Also ird songs are available in many variations. The support is friendly and new features are to be seen soon.
