Participation in this program is currently limited to USAA members with an active auto insurance policy in select states.

The USAA SafePilot App instructs, inspires and rewards safe driving habits to help keep you safe on the road while lowering your auto insurance premium.

Eligible members can receive a discount of up to 10% for enrolling and participating in the program, and earn a premium discount at renewal time for being safe drivers. 

When activated, the app monitors driving habits including phone handling, hands-free phone use, harsh braking, and how much you drive. The better you drive, the greater the discount on your next premium. All members of a household included on a USAA auto insurance policy can participate, with the earned discount based on an average of each driver’s individual score.

The accuracy of this app is horrible. Apparently, I have been involved in quite a few accidents. The one accident (got rear-ended) that did actually happen, it didn't detect. Location information is also incorrect. After a quick trip to the grocery store today, the app seems to think that I live on a golf course 9 miles south of my actual location. I don't even like golf. This app is going to drive my insurance up instead of down with all the inaccurate data that is being captured.

Firstly, I live in the country where the county only maintains the dirt road once a year. It has hundreds of pot holes and is a washboard road. Also, rain runoff ruts and big rocks cause infraction points each time I hit one. It's a 25mph zone, while I drive 5-10 mph slower than that. Additionally, this app uses more than 16% of my battery, even in standby mode. Not only that, just touching the phone or if it's jostled causes an infraction point, and I can't use Google maps to navigate.

This app is great and the discounts are nice. The issue that I have with it is that on an Android, it won't automatically continue to run in the background even when permissions have been enabled. You have to open the app before you drive and then let it run in the background and then it dings you for using your phone while driving... Again, it's a great app and nice idea but it needs work. A lot of work.
