The best app for beginners, but the new HSK 3.0 course feels very rushed. The exercises are often not clear showing an image for which you need to come up with a relevant statement, and various exercises feel AI generated. The voice speaking words out loud is different for different words, and the speaking speed setting is ignored when switching between the courses. With time it will likely become as polished as their HSK 2.0 course, but for now it's not worth paying to be a beta tester.

I tried Duolingo which is insanely expensive and doesn't really give you much insight into the grammar, pronunciation, or characters of Chinese which is important to truly understanding the language and your Chinese being useful in China. So far, this program has given everything I would expect from a Chinese learning language app. If you want to learn a language seriously, study something that is specific to the language. This app is specifically designed for understanding Chinese!

6/7/25 I've been using the free version 1 for less than a week, and I love it! It gives more detail and practice than what I've seen in Duolingo so far. HelloChinese gives you details on how the characters are formed and opportunity to practice writing them which makes recognition easier. It also gives a nice variety of listening and speaking exercises, even showing what areas of your pronunciation need work. Thanks for the great app! When I get one of the paid versions, I'll update the review.
