Participation in this program is currently limited to USAA members with an active auto insurance policy in select states.

The USAA SafePilot App instructs, inspires and rewards safe driving habits to help keep you safe on the road while lowering your auto insurance premium.

Eligible members can receive a discount of up to 10% for enrolling and participating in the program, and earn a premium discount at renewal time for being safe drivers. 

When activated, the app monitors driving habits including phone handling, hands-free phone use, harsh braking, and how much you drive. The better you drive, the greater the discount on your next premium. All members of a household included on a USAA auto insurance policy can participate, with the earned discount based on an average of each driver’s individual score.

Ratings and reviews

The good: I appreciate the discount and that it discourages phone use while driving. The bad: On my old budget phone, the RAM usage prevented multitasking effectively even not driving. Playing music and using navigation at the same time became difficult. The app runs constantly. The downright infuriating: the app frequently and inaccurately registers harsh braking events. It often penalizes phone usage after I've left my vehicle. I'm increasingly dissatisfied with its performance.

Needs some serious upgrades. I have been using this app for over 8 months now. It's not the greatest for android users. You have to open the app for every trip and keep it running in the background just for it to work. Even then it will miss trips you make sometimes due to GPS failures in bad weather. (Edit) App has gotten worse as time went on. Was supposed to get a 30% discount after the quarter was up thanks to using the app. Instead my payment went up another $15 a month. Not worth it!

App is horrible. I can't use my phone's GPS while I'm traveling because that counts as "phone use", even if I set everything up before I even start the car, and do nothing for the entire trip. If I pull to the side of the road to answer a text, if I don't wait long enough "phone use". Heck, even when I use the controls on my steering wheel to change songs when I'm playing MP3s is phone usage
