Industry Leading Security Features
Messages are stored on Proton Mail servers using end-to-end encryption at all times and are transmitted securely between Proton servers and user devices. This largely eliminates the risk of message interception.

Zero Access to Your Email Content
Proton Mail's zero access architecture means that your data is encrypted in a way that makes it inaccessible to us. Data is encrypted on the client side using an encryption key that Proton does not have access to. This means we don't have the technical ability to decrypt your messages.

Open-Source Cryptography
Proton Mail's open-source software has been thoroughly vetted by security experts from around the world to ensure the highest levels of protection. Proton Mail only uses secure implementations of AES, RSA, along with OpenPGP, while all of the cryptographic libraries used are open source. By using open-source libraries, Proton Mail can guarantee that the encryption algorithms used do not have clandestinely built-in back doors.

Proton Easy Switch
Migrate from Gmail, Outlook, Yahoo, iCloud Mail or AOL to Proton Mail in just a few taps. Your messages, calendars and contacts are transferred automatically, so you’re up‑and‑running in moments—without any manual exporting or importing.

Gmail Auto‑forwarding
Enable auto‑forwarding from any number of Gmail accounts and funnel all the emails that matter into your Proton Mail inbox. Preserve Gmail’s convenience while adding an extra layer of privacy protection.

Proton Mail in the press:

“Proton Mail is an email system which uses end-to-end encryption, making it impossible for outside parties to monitor.” Forbes

“A new email service being developed by a group from MIT that met at CERN promises to bring secure, encrypted email to the masses and keep sensitive information away from prying eyes.” Huffington Post

I've been using Proton Mail for a few years, but I'm considering dropping it. This app fails to show me all of my emails. After I open them in the browser, they become visible in the app. That's very annoying. Reliably receiving emails is the main job of an email app. Update 12/8/25 The app continues to fail to display all emails and there's no way to know what's missing without logging in using a browser. This has been happening for two months. I've informed support multiple times.

That doesn't sound right! Please share your app logs with us via the in-app 'Report a problem' option, so our team can look further into this. Thank you in advance!

Proton Mail is great, but the mobile app is disappointing. It doesn't seem like the settings actually stick. Example: I've disabled the ability to group messages, yet I still get messages showing up in threads. I changed my signature on the desktop app but the mobile app kept using my old signature. Worst of all though, the unread emails count is unreliable, even after force closing and reopening. Emails also mysteriously reappear as unread days after reading. Frustrating!

Are you logging out and then back into your account? If so, the app settings are reset to their default values when you sign out. Our team is working on improving the experience with the unread counter. As for the other issues you report, please reach out to us via the in-app 'Report a problem' option.

First impressions are good in some ways bad in others. When I pull down to refresh, it just spins infinitely so I need to close the app and reopen it to get new messages. If I change any settings for folders, labels, etc, it takes forever for them to appear in my actual mailbox to start organizing. For example, I created a "Work" label 5 minutes before this review and as of right now, when I use the add label button on a message, it's not there despite it showing up in the settings.

That doesn't sound right at all. Please make sure you have a stable connection. If perhaps you are using a VPN, try switching servers or disabling it temporarily. If the same behavior persists, report it to us via the in-app 'Report a problem' option.
