A good start. I'd like to see more fine grain controls for web filtering. The rating system for the play store also needs a bit more control such as auto block on app download. I would also love to see in app reports, texts and messages. Please please put in the next release.
Great features for younger children. Didn't give it a 5 stars bcuz the kids device needs Android 7.0 or higher. So normally makes it difficult to just pass your device down. Other than that the parental controls were awesome and free which is great. It had features I used pay for.
Family link is a fantastic solution for our preteen. It's easy to configure once set up, and it helps with bedtime limits. I like being able to see our daughter's location. Really happy with this option.
I was really excited about this for my young child. However, as I began to set it up I realized that my child wouldn't be able to utilize Youtube...at all. This is a problem for me as my child frequently watches train videos (Union Pacific and Norfolk Southern). He wouldn't be able to do this. I really wanted this to work out but no Youtube is a no go for me.
So we bought a tablet for my 7 yr olds birthday. Apparently its too old already or something because it crashes every time I try to complete the setup. Guess I'll find another way to protect my child. Total B.S.
Update 6/24 force stopping the app stops location from working. Kids should be blocked from settings so this can't happen. 6/23: location no longer works. I even reset and reinstalled and same problem. My 12 year old learned if you go into apps and uninstall/disable then reinstall youtube then he can use youtube despite the app not working. He managed in over 6 hours before I caught it. Update 5/19 if you turn on airplane mode then turn off location then turn airplane mode off it cuts the ability to turn location on from the parental controls. You have to manually turn it back on to regain the ability to switch it off and on. Update 4/28 my son was able to remove it. Maybe he should work for google. All he had to do was remove/delete the google account I created for him. Seems like a pretty big oppsie. Finally an app that sorta works. My son can bypass the youtube block when a friend sends a youtube link via text. Then he can watch whatever he likes. As for the age issue just back date their birth year before they turn 13. I do think until a child is a legal adult they should have limited control. I don't want my 12 year old watching porn etc. So google needs to rethink giving full control to a 13 year old. Other than that, so far my son hasn't figured out how to disable it.
