I enjoy using Google Voice for voicemail but the new version seems to force texts on you as well. I tried to turn it off but I only succeed at turning text application. I don't want text notifications but I do want voicemail notifications. Also, there is no longer a widget. The widget made it easy to scroll through voicemail. The text feature cannot replace my existing application because it doesn't seem to to MMS. I am still playing around with the functionality but I am started getting SMS on Voice and MMS on my other app so I just uninstalled it. I will wait on fixes to make it work as it previously did. .
Got the new updated APK from online: the new design is so so so much nicer; group texts are smooth, including sending MMS; the top tabs, especially the call log are cool new additions also being able to finally getting rid of hangouts. Everything feels modern and smooth now. One thing I noticed is there's no gif support, kinda seems like a basic thing to leave out. What's up with that?
Ok, I had to update my review after their 1/31/2017 update. They made it MUCH better. Google Voice is a great concept. It used to do SMS and MMS in a weird way, but the new app design hides that odd complexity for the most part. They addressed pretty much every complaint I had, and it's 100% better. Google Voice is great if you want to keep a phone number regardless of almost any device you have. I had a personal and work cell, but ported my personal cell number to Google Voice and use both on my single work cell phone. When you dial, it prompts you for which number you want to ring out on. When someone calls, it rings just like it was a cell call. Thanks for refreshing this app, Google. It's awesome!
While this update is much welcome and a vast improvement over the last, I still don't consider it ready for primetime. I had gotten accustomed to Hangouts and it has been very usable but having a dedicated Google Voice is more desirable. However, the picture messaging doesn't always work and it still doesn't handle certain attachments. I ended up going back to Hangouts until a more improved update comes out. The good news is that I moved it from ONE STAR to two stars so we're making progress!
Omg!!! I've been waiting for this! I had to come back and edit my review from years ago. I've used my Google voice number for years now. Hangouts was so slow to send pics and had too many steps and I didn't like it but I used it anyway bcuz all I use are my GV #'s. Love the design. It's just works just as fast as the native SMS app that comes with the phone. Easier and app friendly. Hand down 2 Google!!! Gotta send them their props 4 this one! Thank u thank u thank u!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! In future updates please consider giving option to send voice recordings and short videos. Thanks again!!!
Help! Please tell me how to get the previous app back. This one has a nice look and feel, and I like that the conversations are in one thread, but you took away the widget and also there is no way to Mark a conversation as unread. The toggle widget is also very important to me. I use both widgets extensively. I really, really need them. Also, how come I can't dial a new number for a call right in the app? I did not intend to upgrade, but I guess my Android did it automatically. Someone please tell me how to get the old version back.
Google Voice has been completely redesigned to include the things you care about:
• A new, intuitive layout keeps your calls, messages, and voicemail organized
• Conversations stay in one continuous thread and support photo sharing and group messaging
• Support for multiple accounts, Android Wear, and in-notification replies, plus improved contact integration
• Improved accessibility and TalkBack support
