Speech Recognition provides speech-to-text functionality to Google and other third party apps to convert what you say to text. For example, it can be used by:
• Google Maps when you use your voice to search places

• Accessibility apps like Voice Access for operating your device through voice

To use Google Speech-to-Text functionality on your Android device, go to Settings > Apps & notifications > Default apps > Assist App. Select Speech Recognition and Synthesis from Google as your preferred voice input engine.

• Google Play Books to “Read Aloud” your favorite book
• Google Translate to speak translations aloud so you can hear the pronunciation of a word

To use Google Text-to-Speech functionality on your Android device, go to Settings > Languages & Input > Text-to-Speech output. Select Speech Recognition and Synthesis from Google as your preferred engine.
Note, on many Android devices, Speech Recognition and Synthesis from Google is already available, but you can update to the latest version here.

Ratings and reviews

For those who are having problems with how much worse the new updates have made what once used to be a great feature turn buggy. I recommend removing updates and using it like that. Since every update makes things worse. Going back to factory form works the best. No random stopping, no having to annunciate words. It works first time as always The way it was supposed to. Say what you wanna say then hit it with that "fix it" and the rest is a charm.

I use this continuously, and for whatever reason it's just gotten worse and worse over the last 6 months or so. It's very frustrating. It recognizes words poorly, it suddenly stops picking up voice... I don't know what's going on, but I really hope they fix it. For the record, the last seven words took four tries because it just kept randomly stopping recording.

Every update it is less accurate and uses more prediction. I constantly see it forgetting words it knows, adding words I never even said a letter or syllable in common with, and changing what I said after the fact despite me pressing stop. I will be reverting back to factory default and most likely looking up an update from years ago, back when it still worked. That is assuming I am not able to find a replacement. That said, y'all are slowly creating a market for an app to replace you.
