I subscribe some magazines through Google Play, I quite enjoyed the experience with Google Newsstand, but with this mandatory update to Google News has been a nightmare. I mostly read my issues offline during my commute. Unfortunately the app is not able to open downloaded issues unless you are online. Yes, I wrote it right you must be online to read downloaded issues. Too bad, I will have to look for another way to read my magazines on Android.

I primarily use Google News to read my Google Play magazine subscriptions now that Newsstand is no longer available. This works fine when online, but more often than not, even if I have downloaded magazines for offline reading - including blue checkmark identifying downloaded magazines - I can't access my downloaded magazines when offline. Instead, I get an error message in the Google News app. I was just travelling and I was very disappointed when I opened up the Google News app expecting to read the magazines I downloaded before departure only to find that they couldn't be accessed while offline. Super frustrating since this is the only option to read magazines purchased through Google Play that I'm aware of.

I have switched to Microsoft News, it's surprisingly great. They are also active with adding user requested features. Google doesn't listen. Redesigns a news reader into oblivion with hardly any user customization and features whilst making it more difficult to consume relevant content due to terrible white space and categories.
