2014: The change in the main UI with a picture background for each tab gives a new feel to reading. The addition of 'view in browser' is also a plus. And now there are even more article under individual tabs, which I felt was a drawback in the previous version. I, personally, am fan of the additional stories viewed after finishing an article. It allows you to continue with the same publisher. 2017: Suggestion system is fairly accurate to my likes. Also the option to remove articles of a certain thread keeps the home tab clean.
This is material design done to the tee. If only all apps could, not only match the aesthetics of this app but, also provide such a smooth and pleasing experience with perfect functionality and great dynamics. I'm really surprised at some of the critism I read in the reviews. In any event, good job Google 👍
I like the app for the design and offline reading, but the listed prices for magazines is confusingly all over the place and it's not clear if it's per issue, or priced per subscription. For example, one magazine is listed at $1.99 until you tap to buy and then it's magically $6.99. Price listing needs to be clear and standardised
New design just ruined a perfectly good app. I had my library as the main screen. Now it's buried down in an inconvenient place. The new navigation makes no sense. The navigation with the bottom bar is filled with stuff I never use but have to look at ALL THE TIME. I was able to go left and right between topics. Now I need to do 4 taps to switch between topics. If Google wants us to just read the "for you" feed, it can remove the bottom bar and all the features of this app.
This has gone from an app that I never use to the only news app I have on my phone. It's so good I deleted Flipboard and News Republic. It's simple yet gives me all of the relevant news from my chosen topics, without the intrusive ads and weird features. It has perfect Read Later implementation too.
Please add the ability to separate magazines from News topics. The organization is hideous when users have many news feeds & magazines. How bout turning the digest into a space for downloaded magazines. Also, it'd be better if the app opened with displaying the date/time in addition to the weather. Apart from these 2 issues, I find the rest of the app near perfect. I love the simplistic approach & the bottom bar being separated into only 4 sections, with a dedicated upper search bar.
- Even faster browsing between articles
- Pinch to zoom into images
- Bug fixes and performance improvements
